Bangkok – Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat
One of the lesser known modes of transport that often goes unlooked by tourists is the Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat. Although it may be lesser known than the more popular Chao Phraya Express Boat, that doesn’t mean that it is not useful. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The Khlong Saen Express Boat can be a very efficient alternative method of travel depending on where you are going.
The Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat is a transportation service that operates on the Khlong Saen Saep in Bangkok, Thailand. The service runs two lines on the Khlong Saen Saep, the Golden Mount Line and the Nida Line. With the both lines combined, the Khlong Saen Saep services over 60,000 passengers per day.
Service for the Nida Line on the Khlong Saen Saep starts at the Wat Sriboonreung Pier and runs west until the Pratunam Pier. The Nida Line has many stops and can get you to many attractions in Bangkok such as Royal City Avenue(RCA), at the Wat Mai Chonglom Pier, and Nana Plaza(Nana Entertainment Plaza), at the Nana Nua Pier. The Nida Line has more stops than the Golden Mount Line, but the Golden Mount Line covers more tourist areas. The Pratunam Pier is where the two lines meet.
Service for the Golden Mount Line starts from the Pratunam Pier and runs west until it ends at the Panfa leelard Pier. This pier is the westernmost and final stop of the Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat. The Panfa Leelard Pier is a short walking distance to attractions such as Wat Saket(Golden Mount), the Democracy Monument, and Khao San Road. The Panfa Leelard Pier can also be used to get to Rattanakosin Island(Old City) where you can see other famous attractions such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew(Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and Wat Pho, but these attractions are a bit farther away and you may be better off using the Chao Phraya Express Boat instead.
The Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat operates from 5:30AM to 8:30PM on the weekdays and until 7PM on weekends. Prices for the Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat range from 10-20 Baht depending on the distance traveled. Once you enter the boat, take a seat and wait for the attendant to come and issue a ticket to you. Since the fare is dependent on the distance traveled you will need to tell the attendant where you are going so he can calculate the fare. If you can’t say your destination, just pay the maximum and be sure to hold on to the small paper tickets that are given to you. If you are going to be transferring between the Golden Mount Line and the Nida Line at the Pratunam Pier then you will need to show your ticket on the next boat.
While the Khlong Saen Saep may be a faster and cheaper way to travel through Bangkok, these conveniences do come with some drawbacks as well. The first drawback is the the Khlong Saen Saep has a reputation for being very polluted not just by sight, but also by smell. The second drawback is that depending on the speed of the boats, there is almost always water sprayed upon passengers. The picture above shows that there are plastic tarps that do offer some protection, but it is inevitable that you will get at least a little wet. The final thing worth mentioning is that the boats can be a little cramped for people with long legs.
